SUMMARY
The BIMORE network was active from October 2006 - May 2011, pursuing novel bio-inspired approaches for molecular (opto) - electronics. The hard work of 19 fellows in intense collaborations across Europe resulted in a number of highly cited research publications.
We measured the electrical conductivity of single molecules between two metal electrodes. We predicted and modeled single molecules as electrical conductors. This is important for future semiconductor technology, in order to reach the molecular limit of miniaturization in devices for memories and logics (Small 6, 1529 (2010), J. Am. Chem. Soc. 133, 184 (2011)
Extremely strong field enhancement in the gap between two gold contacts. Nature Nantoechnology 5, 732-736 (2010)
We investigated highly efficient charge and energy transfer processes which occur in natural ”optoelectronic devices” (e.g. purple bacterial light harvesting complexes). The understanding of these processes on a molecular level is the basis for the improvement of solar cells, sensors, and photonic devices (Proc. Nat. Acad. Soc. 2012, 109(5), 1473-1478).
We studied the photophysics of isolated and aggregated carbon nanotubes and characterized ultrafast charge and energy transfer phenomena, important for nanoscale optoelectronic applications (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2011 107, 257402 (2011); ACSNano 4(7),4265-4273 (2010), Nature Physics 5, 54 - 58 (2009))
We demonstrated electrooptical switching devices with improved performance (J. Phys. Chem. C 115(7): 3106-3114 (2011).
9 Institutes from 8 different countries across Europe have contributed their infrastructure and expertise.
19 fellows from Europe, Asia and America took advantage of this interdisciplinary environment to become experts in the field.
BIMORE so far produced 70 international publications, that have already been cited more than 300 times (as of September 2011). The collaborations between the single institutes within BIMORE have led to long-term partnerships.
BIMORE has also been very active in science communication (see below) and in the development of complementary skills.
Highlights of Science Communication
BIMORE in the Planetarium in Rome
2009 Researchers Night in Rome (Italy)
On 25.09.2009, BIMORE highlighted the international dimension of research in the "European corner" in the Rome Planetarium.
A group of BIMORE fellows explained the importance of the bio-inspired approach to resolve the urgent needs of society, and they explained how the EU supports mobility among young researchers.
