Second BIMORE Summer School
Killearn (United Kingdom), 2008-05-10 - 2008-05-15This Summer School was focused on Managerial capabilities for young researchers. A series of interactive workshops were focused on presentation skills (giving an interview on TV, funding acquisition, writing a newspaper report), but also research ethics was discussed.
Is it time to shoot for the sun?
Prof. Richard Cogdell (University of Glasgow)
Tutorial Talk on light harvesting and energy conversion. Insight into present & future global energy needs, highlighting how bio-inspired approaches can help to increase the efficiency of artificial light harvesting.
Ethics in Science
Dr. Barbara Cogdell, Dr. Dorothy Aidulis (University of Glasgow)
Workshop. After a tutorial introducing into the fields where science touches ethics, a workshop took place where teams had to elaborate an assessment of a specific ethical conflict situation.
Newspaper workshop
Dr. Ray Mc Hugh (University of Glasgow)
This tutorial + workshop, researchers learned how to present scientific results to a non-scientific audience. The tutorial showed the work of a public relations office and highlighted how to draw attention to research outcomes. In the workshop, researchers were asked to write a newspaper article about own research results, which was then assessed.
Video training program
Prof. Richard Cogdell (University of Glasgow)
In this two-step workshop, young researchers worked out their skills of presentation in front of a video camera. Everybody (including the senior researchers) had to give a short (unprepared) presentation, which was then discussed in the plenum. The next day, the young researchers should give a prepared talk. Strong improvements with respect to self-confidence and presentation skills were obtained. The skills are valuable not only for interviews in TV, but in any situation where the researchers is to present her/himself personally in front of an audience (conference, job interview, project assessmnet in industry, etc.)
EU grant applications
Dr. Ulrike Kolch (University of Glasgow)
An outline of the instruments of the 7th framework programme of the EU, addressing specifically the options for young researchers but also host-driven actions.
National grant applications
Prof. Richard Cogdell (University of Glasgow)
Workshop. After an explanation of the British research funding system, the young researchers were ask to write the first outline page of a grant proposal, which was then assessed by Prof. Cogdell.
Organization of a research group
Prof. Richard Cogdell (University of Glasgow)
Tutorial talk, addressing recruitment, funding, strategic and day-to-day operation aspects of successfully running a research group in academia.
